Non-profit Web Site Language Translation Worldwide
The Larson Family Foundation is working with the non-profit organizations it supports to assist and teach them how to create foreign language versions of their main English web sites to extend the knowledge and awareness of their good works worldwide.
Since the dawn of computers, automated translation of human languages has been a tempting but elusive goal for many of the world’s most talented researchers.
Using a fundamentally different approach to this technical challenge, Google and Language Weaver have developed two of the most advanced and easy to use automated translation software systems based in statistics instead of complex linguistic rules. This software learns to translate new information by examining previous human translations. This innovative technology overcomes many of the problems of traditional machine translation (MT). SMT is being perfected constantly and the quality of automatic translation is increasing continually through research and use.
Using these tools, translation is quite a simple process. Below are translations of our LFF web site into 12 foreign languages. This took about 15 minutes of relatively simple programming using FrontPage, CoreFTP, SMT Translation services from Google and Language Weaver, and simple click and point techniques.

Language translation services from Google and Language Weaver and others using SMT Statistical Machine Translation are improving continuously through usage. Also web site coding techniques can be used to improve the % of translation that occurs. Simple changes in HTML coding techniques as specifying Links in HTML rather than as .jpg images will improve the % of the site that is readily translatable.
To indicate how easy these tools are to use, translating the eight web sites below into 40 languages took under one hour to accomplish once the proper HTML, FTP and SMT tools and techniques are set up.
